Perhaps you’ve noticed…

Perhaps you’ve noticed I made a couple changes here and there. I put the trackbacks on the same page as the comments, and they both come up in popup windows. Just one of those things people seem to prefer over going to a different page. (Like I do at times) I added Perma-link which goes to the main comments page. I’ve made a few cosmetic changes which no one will ever notice I’m sure. (Can you tell I’m working and waiting for something to get finished? Yeap!) :cowtiny:

  1. My popup killer in Avant (using IE6) killed the comment window. FireFox didn’t.

The trackback url field is too tiny..

    But looking good! :)

  2. OOps. would help if i used the right variable.  ;-)

And I made the trackback input box wider, that should work now. :)

  3. Hehe. I’ve already been looking at the comments module, and it’s some heavy stuff! Rick needs some rest. :)

I’m thinking the query has to change and couple things here and there…it all depends on how the structure of the TB table is. Haven’t looked at it yet.

    Need coffee. LOL

  4. I’m planning on adding the ability to edit your own comment, or a link so superadmins can do so. Did that for a client using PMClassic.

  5. Ooh, that would be a nice feature Sue. I don’t know how many times I’ve made a comment and noticed errors in spelling and grammar. :)

  6. Ok, Mr. Smartypants.  You want to impress me? Make something like the MT Simple Comments plugin, which combines comments and trackbacks into a single chronological listing.  :-P

  7. Yes, what the MT SimpleComments does is list all comments and tracks together, without separating them. In otherwords, a Trackback is treated just like another comment. This probably would require a rewrite of the comment module to include trackback data.

I hope someone is going to write a whole new comment module one day to include that feature, as well as things like formatting buttons, nested/threaded comment display, and community moderation via comment scoring, like at slashdot.com.

I bet that’s a module some people would pay for.  If you wanna make some money, I’ll spec it out, you code it, and we’ll sell it.

  8. Dave, yeah, that’s easier to work on than the simplecomments. I’ll have something later on today.

Consequently, I never understood how the slashdot thing worked with comments. Are those scored by normal members or moderators? I have an account, but never found an option to score it.

  9. I think at slashdot you have to be a moderator to score comments.

I’ve been playing around with the system in Drupal, and it’s pretty cool. The admin decides who can score comments, and depending on your user level, how much weight your score carries.  Thus, the admin’s score is more influential than the average user.

If scoring is enabled, then people set a threshold. If you set your threshold at 2, then you wont see any comments with an average score less than 2.  This is great if you have a problem with comment trolls on your site.

  10. Ahhh that’s pretty nice. So some comments don’t get seen at all? that seems awful unfair LOL but I can see how that would get rid of the trolls.

Might be something interesting to have in the future. have you posted about this on the EE forums as a FR?

  11. Yes, I have posted in the forums about it, but I haven’t really followed the thread to see if anyone has replied.

Yes, some comments never get seen, but only if you set your threshold that way.  The default option is “view all comments"- they only disappear if you change it.

This feature is really only useful if you have a LOT of comment traffic and sometimes have trolls.

The downside to this feature is that people don’t always play fair.  For instance, suppose you have a political site with a lot of debate in the comments. Most of your regulars are hardcore liberals.  A right-wing conservative gets into the debate.  Even if this person is being rational and civil, definitely not a troll, the rest might gang up on him and score all his comments low so they don’t get viewed. Not cool, but it happens.

So it’s not a feature for everyone, but I’d like to have the option.

  12. right, now I remember when I view comments, it would say “you have 3 comments below your threshold.” so that’s kinda cool, now that I think about it.

k5 is pretty similar too, except they do it for stories as well as comments.
