Linklist losing interest?

I’m not Really sure nowadays if the linklist module is something that I Really need to maintain. I keep seeing people move away from it, for bigger and better things. It could very well be for better folksonomy, which seems to be one big reason, and yet another is just the vastness of places like bloglines or del.ico.us. I think perhaps the biggest factor with waning interest to linklist (to me) is the lack of community involvement with the module.
Of course, I could just be high, and not realize that there are lot of people who actually use and rely on linklist and are waiting for the vast number of improvements it needs. Which is probably the case. :)

Of course, inevitably, I come to the great wall called “TIME” and I cannot do much about that. The linklist at best was a side project of mine that grew into this monster of a module. It’s still a side project, and I keep wanting to improve it, however, time seems to run away and I just never have enough. I need more hours in a day, it’s as simple as that.

Since there haven’t Really been too many feature requests to linklist, I just assume two things: 1) it’s working satisfactory, and has all the features a user could ever want! or 2) no one has any suggestions, because they don’t expect it to do anything more. I’m sure that neither is true, however, there are times when that’s what i’m thinking. I know there is room for improvement. I know there are things in there that you wish you had, but you never say.

You Really need to start telling me what you need in the module.

I know a lot of the stuff is already on the TODO list. I think that there is always room for a “i second that feature request” and a “wow, i wish this had that too.” because comments like those escalate a TODO item or Feature Request into the next priority “HIGH” to be completed.

Overall, I guess feedback about the module would be great. I would love to see remarks such as “dude, your module sucks because…” Of course, it does have to follow with an explanation, as that is the best part of knowing what Really sucks about something. If something is not working like you thought, how much you wanna bet at least one other person thought the same thing? So you voice your opinion, and that other person comes out of their shell and says “yeah…i Totally agree.” and so on and so on. Soon, it becomes this big gigantic complaint or request that can’t be ignored. I guess that’s what I wish I could get.

But that’s just me. I could be wrong.

  1. The linklist is perfect as it is, at least for what I needed it for.  That’s why I don’t harrass you more. ;) One thing that’d be cool is that I currently keep a list of URLs in the acronym module and those are mostly duplicated from the linklist.  Some way to create some sort of relationship or something there would be neat.  But it’s so minor… =)

  2. i, for one, use your linklist module and other modules you have created. the module is robust. please do not discontinue the development of them. the fact that not many people contact you for troubleshooting is because your module is so well written. please do not mistaken that as loss of interest by the community.

  3. I’ve recently started using the linklist module and it’s great the way it is. I really haven’t had time to mess around with it too much, though. If any problems arise, I’ll let you know!

  4. It would seem right now that a lot of folks are just getting around to using linklist. One of these days I’ll come out with 1.3 with improved keyword/tag implementation. Soon.

  5. I love linklist! What about the ‘global editing’ that you mentioned before, back when I had to go through all 300 of my links and edit them to be lowercase? (I forget what post that comment was on) I thought that was a great idea!!

  6. Ok, I see what you want to do, and that’s exactly one thing that the linklist is useful for, there’s just one thing about using the keywords. it looks for the 3rd segment of the url, not the 2nd. Here’s an example:

    http://www.psychodaisy.com/index.php/ee/links/key…

the keyword that linklist is going to look at is the 3rd segment, which in this case is keyword. Here’s a definitive EE style template breakdown:

    http://www.yourdomain.com/index.php/template group]/[template name]/[keywords]

so in your case, it should be something of the sort of:

    http://mysite.com/index.php/people/index/persons-…

that’s how i’m invisioning it should be…unless i’m mistaken about how you’re generating the person’s page.

I’m assuming that all the pages will look similar, but each person would display a different thing.

But remember it’s looking at segment 3. that’s important in creating your urls.

The reason for segment3 is because EE templates are broken down that way. i.e. template group/template name.

Hopefully that makes some things clear for you.

  7. btw, i fixed the wiki. i had a change in the way the index page shows up on the site, and forgot to fix that site.

and it’s not listed in the EE modules page, because this module is not an “official” module.

  8. I have just started figuring out how to use your linklist module and have 2 or 3 sites that I would like to use it on. I am in the learning curve phase right now… have been tinkering with it for hours and definitely think I will appreciate the functionality it provides, so I am sorry to hear that you are tiring of it. I would second the thoughts of other people, though, that if you haven’t heard from users it might just be because it is working splendidly for them.

One note: I had a hard time finding the module since it is not listed on the EE Modules page and the link from the EE Wiki leads to a deadend. The only way I found it was from reading posts about it on the forum, so maybe people are just not finding it, like me.

I am also an EE newbie so I haven’t yet wrapped my head around how I can integrate it with my templates. What I want to do is have a weblog called people and an index template in a template group called people. When I land on an individual entry page I want to dynamically see a list of related links for that person. So in otherwords, when I go to http://mysite.com/index.php/people/persons-name, where persons-name is the entry title, I want to see a list of links related to that person in the sidebar. I tried it using keywords in linklist and specifying persons-name as a keyword in the link and then leaving dynamic=on in the template with the hopes that when I was displaying http://mysite.com/index.php/people/persons-name it would dynamically parse the url for persons-name and pull up the link for that person. It’s not working exactly as I expected, though, but I am still playing around with my template hierarchy and figure I will have a better time tackling this project once all my templates are finished.

Right off though I can see how it would be great to have the link list be able to use a category group and also to have it integrated with the publish page similar to the category pane, so I could easily select multiple links to relate to individual entries when I publish them as well as add new links to the linklist from the publish page…

At any rate, it is certainly useful as is so please keep up the good work. As an EE newbie I am not sure what the bigger and better options would be for managing links within EE??
