Ok, here’s the situation. I have a HTPC running Beyond TV. I presently run Windows XP Home on it, but I’m considering changing that to XP Media Center edition. I’m using an ATI Radeon All-in-wonder card to watch everything on my TV, and the Hauppage Video Capture card to plug in my cable. I’m also using the firefly remote which is awesome for Beyond TV (well, they were made for each other!)
My question is pretty simple. If I upgrade Windows to the Windows XP Media Center edition, can I totally get rid of BeyondTV? Will there be compatibility issues with my current PC and video cards in my system to the new XP Media Center?

My media center uses the Kauppage Video capture card too and re: video card I currently have an internal 128mb which does the job for now. I don’t think you gonna need Beyond TV or anything else for what matters… media center does it all
Wow. Was any of that in english? O_o
(Or am I just that ungeek?)
Originally I put as the title, “calling all geeks” but I didn’t want to leave out anyone. :P
You’re just too ungeeky Pandora. Feel free to bust out the nerd spray. :P
did someone just call me a geek? Or you jsut forgot to put the r (gReek) ?
I’m – UNgeeky?
::sobs::
Say it ain’t so!!!!!
(no, I was calling you a geek….)
BITE ME SIS!!! now let me go do some more unpacking mmk? and why don’t you both come and help me huh?
ungeek could be a good thing. :P
Wow, you two are just a riot. I’m going to go into my corner now.
I offered to help you unpack before! You never let me! q:
We’re a riot? I don’t think we broke anything… (;
Have you considered going open source? You could try MythTV. It looks like it could be an inexpensive replacement, if a bit more time consuming to set-up.
To answer your real question. Installing MCE shouldn’t be a problem. The only issues I’ve come across are minor driver issues and usb problems but all solveable. Thought I suggest you check the MS knowledgebase first before installing, and definately do a “practice” install before purchasing any software. ;)
My question to you though is why do you want to load MCE? Your current config sounds fine. Are there features you want to partake in or is it more a case of neophilia?
:D
I’ve thought about MythTV. :)
Well, I suppose the biggest reason to load MCE would be the free updating. I suppose that would be until Vista comes out (someday) and puts XP into the list of “defunct” like win98/ME.
Updating with BeyondTV is great. but I can foresee a new version coming out, and well, I have to buy it again.
That’s the only clencher I guess. But it’s heck of a lot cheaper than an OS.
What I really need to do is upgrade the HTPC, and stop thinking if MCE is better. I’d imagine that MCE is really no different than BeyondTV, except BeyondTV isn’t made by MS.
Wouldn’t that make Beyaond TV better then? ;)
Well then it comes back to MythTV. It’s free, and supported by the community. But requires more time initially spent. MCE costs, upgrades cost. But have a billion dollar company behind it. Beyond TV already installed, good track record. But upgrade cost, and base OS upgrade issues. Factor in personal preferrences and you have your choice.
I think this is what it boils down to. :D
Oh and Pandora, have you looked at your site through Safari? Not so good :P
Safari? What the hell is Safari? O_o
I guess yoshi was right, you aren’t really geeky at all…
^_^
I’ll stick with what i got. :)
Hmm I’ve never had a problem viewing her site with Safari myself. Am I missing something? I’ll have to try firefox and see the difference.
Hmm actually the only difference I can see so far is that the titles are all pretty in safari, but the title images don’t show up in firefox. :/
title images show fine on MY FF.. yoshi.. you got issues :P
Ya. I use FF and the title images are verra pretty in it.
And I’m glad that my site works in a browser I don’t know of. (;
This just goes to prove my point about title images. They are not necessarily a good thing. :/ I bet firefox on my pc works fine.
I bet you in 10 minutes, firefox works fine with the title images. Hmph.
Pandora you seriously meant that you don’t know Safari? I thought you were just kidding…
And yoshi.. throw all your computers away.. they are no good :P
I was kidding. (;
I know about it. I’ve just never used it or heard about anyone who was using it. (=
Wow, this is getting interesting. I can load evanescing.org, and get main content of the page, minus all the css stuff. I looked at the source and it links everything to http://www.evanescing.org Normally not a problem because in the DNS the whole cname entries take care of this. But I do a DNS lookup for http://www.evanescing.org and it comes up unknown host. So it looks like the DNS info my ISP’s DNS servers are getting some bad info. The only way I figure you guys are getting the “good” page is your DNS servers have the good info or had the good info form before the change, if there was one. Probably because you guys both visit the site occasionally, where for me the first time was today, and my DNS servers first time as well(maybe). Any thoughts?
the constant.. you just gave me a headache :P
maybe your ISP DNS info needs updating ? dunno
and Pandora sis.. Safari is being used by everyone who uses a mac.. it’s the official mac browser
My head now hurts too. I’m not sure what you are talking about? *rubs her head*
Oh. I didn’t know that, Jenny. I know one person who has a Mac and – he uses mozilla. q:
GG, I hope thats the issue, it makes it easy. Also I tried to load the page from the IP directly and it shot me to a CPanel notice page, telling me that a site has been configured for this address. But when you make a request via browser it asks for the site on port 80, and is shunted to correct page to be viewed. So I should have seen the same thing as I do when loading evanescing.org so there is an entry missing somewhere. If it is a matter of my ISP DNS needing a flush. Then this config of the site I am seeing now should be recent. When was the site created? More than a month? If so then the normal DNS seetings on the ISp side should have taken care of that problem. Of course my ISP could be really dumb and have their settings really off like set to “never”. But highly unlikely.
Actually, the server which housed my site died in the middle of the month. Lemme see. Um. July 16? Something like that. They had to restore it from a backup.
Maybe that’s the issue?
TC, what you’re seeing with the cPanel page is correct. that happens with all name based virtual domains. (shared hosting) so that’s nothing we can do. because the server is looking for for the name evanescing.org you’ll always get the “there’s no website configured at this address” thing.
I did some digging around (absolutely no pun intended there for you techie types) and found that the settings are fine. There are some kooky settings for the DNS there, but nothing out of super ordinary that would cause some issues.
if there were some issues with the server in the middle of the month I would suspect that the name servers you’re using TC are caching the info, and could be bringing some funkiness to you.
that’s my first impression at least. :)
feel free to IM me at psychodaisy2 (yim) or psychodaisy on googletalk. :)
Jebus. My whole life is available for someone to see! ::pulls up the covers:: EEEEEK!
Actually, that info is a hugh help. Thank you. It does explain that there was a change and recently. A crash and restore from backup is also a big indicator as to why there would be a descrepency in the config. If the the server had only a old back-up to recover from or only a partial back-up that would explain how the config was left incomplete whether human error or the back-up had info of a non-complete website. Unfortunately the info doesn’t answer the question of whos info is old. I’d like to give my ISP the benefit of the doubt but it’s the primary telco here so that means it’s large and monopolistic. Therefore not terribly concerned with the .0001%(i.e. evanescing.org). And I am not about to let myself experience an hour of tier 1 techsupport in order to get to someone to take a look at the DNS record.
Pandora what is your DNS server IP? Maybe I can bypass this whole problem…
Mmm? Are we talking about the IP address to get to my site?
And I wouldn’t wish Tier 1 tech support on anyone…
It’s okay I found it, let me see if it works…
Yup works!
