Why do you blog?

I sit here tonight, illuminated by a small lamp, and the glow of my laptop screen, thinking to myself, “why do I blog?” Interesting question, don’t you think? Honestly, I’m not quite sure anymore. I guess I’m rather curious to know what other people’s answer to this question is. Call it curiosity. For me, I think we’ll have to take the time machine way back to the beginning…

In the beginning, I remember that I just wanted to have one place where I could put down links and tell people about them. I guess I would have to say that that’s pretty much how weblogs Really started. It was a central place where folks like me could share what we’ve seen around the web and come back to it later because we remembered that we visited a site, but couldn’t remember exactly what the address was.

Then of course, I guess I thought people might be interested in knowing just what I had for dinner that day. Of course, in retrospect, I guess this could have been a way for me to remind myself what I had for dinner that day too.

But Seriously, why do I blog nowadays?

Perhaps it is indeed an egotistical thing, where the universe does indeed revolve around my life, and it’s so tragic, and it’s so happy and it’s so drama. But alas, no, my life is not the focal part of the universe and unfortunately, what I had for lunch does not impact what people are going to do for dinner.

So wait. what was the question again? Oh yeah. Why do I blog?

I guess I blog because it’s an outlet. It’s a place where I can talk about things, or share interesting (or not so interesting!) stories that happened to me, or perhaps just because I want to chronicle my life. But if this is a record of my life, then, there’s quite a bit missing.

I can’t possibly talk about every thought, every emotion, everything that I do, everything I eat, drink, or whatever. If that were true, then this site would be a bunch of nonsense. Which, more often than not, is the case.

So what about you? Why do you blog?

Curious minds want to know. Really.

  1. wow, yoshi this is deep. i was reading blogs long before i had one. they were a guilty pleasure, but by holiday 2003 i could not resist. my voice had to be heard, even with nothing to see. heh.

  2. Mine started out as a way to keep in touch with my Dad and friends. I was so busy going to school and working full-time for almost five years that I hardly saw anybody outisde of those places. It also serves as a vehicle for my boyfriend’s mother to keep tabs on us (we moved to a different city once and he forgot to tell her–she sent the police looking for us!).

It’s a place to vent. I’ve never been particularly good at getting my thoughts and feelings out. Sadly, because of some of the people who read it, I have to censor myself and I can’t really say what I want to all the time. I’ve tried to keep two separate blogs: one for friends and famiy and one where I’m anonymous, but it was just too darned much work.

It’s also a place to catalog cool stuff I find on the Internet or chronicle events. It’s ineresting to go back and see what I wrote on this day three years ago. It’s also the only thing keeping me connected to web design/architecture. I do learn some cool things trying to emulate features I see on other sites. One day I’ll actually finish my redesign and get it live!

I think about chucking the darned thing once in awhile. Hardly anybody comments (except you, Yoshi!), so it sometimes seems pointless. The people I know IRL mention when I haven’t updated in awhile, so I keep it up mainly for them.

Wow, didn’t mean to ramble that long.

  3. I started out as a way to keep my family informed on what was going on in my little corner of the world. But now, I’ve come to know alot of people from all over this planet and it’s quite fun . I’ve also met some of my blog friends personally, and they’ve turned out to be wonderful people.

So when do the Wench and I get to meet you?

  4. I’ve only blogged since living in the Netherlands. Maybe it’s a language thing, I don’t really know. I don’t interact that much in real life….  and that’s probably my choice too. I much prefer to have acquaintances than friends.

I’ve always been a bit of a loner, so what better way to blog and share your stories and daily life to those that want to listen. I can quite easily switch my PC off when I’m done cause I’m a “If I want to go I am going right now!” type of person.

Now, try doing that in REAL life lol.
