100 facts in 100 days - Fact 20

20. I alphabetize our DVD library. It’s a chore when we buy something new, because I have re-arrange a a few of the older DVD’s, depending on what location the new one gets put into.

Of course, this prompts me to ask a simple question of how you would alphabetize numbers. Do you put them before A, in numerical order? Or would you put them in order as if you spelled out the number? Like 3 = Three, so it’s put in the T section. I use the latter method myself.

Also, my OCD self has made in front of the A’s, a section which is dedicated to Disney films. Because it’s a theme that warrants it I suppose.

“Proper” alpha filing technique dictates that the numerical numbers would go in front of the A’s. We alpha ours too, except for holiday movies, TV series and Box Sets which each get their own section. Those however, are alphabetized in their own sections. Who’s OCD?

Yoshi Says:

LOL who dictates what’s “proper”?

Ma Says:

I alpha mines too. And numbers numerical order but after the alpha. Disney has a place of its own in alpha order.

Daddy Forever Says:

I like to organize my DVDs by category (sci-fi, comedy, drama, etc). But the kids usually mess them all up. I use to organize my super hero action figures by team (X-Men, Avengers, Fantastic 4, etc), but my son stole them from me and claimed them as his toys.

AAAAHAHAAAA….. Oh my word Yoshi!! We seriously ARE cast out of the same mold! I swear that “alphabetizing” numbers based on the letters they are spelled with is seriously something that only I thought I would have thought of.. Too flippin funny. (also a bit on the OCD side myself..)

Personally, I think that I would have to lean towards putting them in numeric order immediately in FRONT of the alphabetized section, but thats just me.

Thank you for the laugh tonight!

Here’s how I did it in case you didn’t know:

Numbers first in numerical order, then all movies in alphabetical order.  TV shows seperate in same order.  TV show movies… those are a toss up but generally in movies (i.e. Serenity).

The only exception to this is if the movie starts with a number but is already spelled out in the title (i.e. Thirteen Ghosts is under T).

Of course that was before everything was put in hard to re-arrange binders for shipping overseas…….

Swan Says:

Ours are kinda alphabetized, but Michael set aside the DVD TV sets.  Then we out grew out little DVD shelf.  So we bought a big DVD shelf(holds 300+ DVDs).  We’re about halfway full.  Well, things have been getting out of hand, so one of these days, we’ll get around to making everything alphabetical order, mixing TV and movie DVDs.

Not sure what we’ll do about numbers though.

Danalyn Says:

Heheh.  We do the same thing with our DVDs.  Numbers go before “a” unless it’s spelled out in the title, then it goes in with the rest of the letters.

local girl Says:

I think that the numerical ones should go before the A’s. What if someone were looking for a DVD in your collection but didn’t know it was a Disney movie? Is it cross-referenced? Just wondering. :-)

Vicki Says:

Ohh now I have something else to do. I had never thought about organazing my DVD’s in alphabetical order. What a great idea.

Recently I have decided to transfer all of my VHS’s to DVD’s because DVD’s look neater.

julie Says:

wait.  there are people who don’t alphabetize their DVDs?  I’m so not OC but I can’t imagine not alphabetizing my DVDs.

Melanie Says:

I used to alphabetize them but it is an endless process with kids in the house.  I say numbers before letters.

rachel Says:

Ok, I organize our DVDs in Alphabetical order. Numbers come first but only if it’s an actual number as in “8 mile”. “Seven” would go under S’s.

If there are movies that because of Title can’t be together but they are in the same series then they go in a section all on their own. TV Shows are kept separate and the “Disney”/animated movies had to be moved to another room because I ran out of room in the main area.

Oh and all Kevin Smith movies are on their own too.

We don’t have any kids to fork my system up so I’m doing ok.

Don’t ask what I do with CD’s.

Yvonne Says:

I put the numbers before A, and the spelled out numbers go in with the letters. The TV shows are mixed in with the movies.

My DVDs are alphabetized, my CDs are alphabetized, and it kinda drives me nuts that I can’t do the same with my books. With books I have to organize them by size to fit all of them in my bookcase.
