CNN has an article: Berkeley to Marines: You’re ‘not welcome in our city’. Apparently, the city of Berkeley is protesting the presence of military recruiters (not necessarily just the Marine Corps, but all military recruiters) in the city.
From the article: ” The battle erupted after the Berkeley City Council approved a measure last week urging the Marine recruiters to leave their downtown office. “If recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome intruders,” the item says.”
Now, I have to admit, I’m not against the war being over. I still have friends who are serving there. I’d love to see them come home. And honestly, I’d love to not see any more of our guys and gals go over there for a tour. But is protesting the recruiters the way to go around it?
Yes, I admit, recruiters can be evil, but not all of them are. The article says, “Military recruiters are salespeople known to lie to and seduce minors and young adults into contracting themselves into military service with false promises regarding jobs, job training, education and other benefits.” Yes, I would not deny this. Some recruiters do what it takes to get people to sign up. Lord knows it’s no different than any other job.
Come on people. This can’t be the way to protest things. Honestly. There has to be a better way. Now I myself would love to hear what that better way is. I personally have to admit that I don’t know. But I definitely know that this is not the way to do it.
I’m glad to hear that the Marine recruiters are not planning on going anywhere. They’re doing their job, and serving the country.
What do you think?
A better question would be: What do you think would happen if we did pull out our troops in Iraq right now? Would there be any consequences?
Yoshi wants to say that he normally wouldn’t write about something like this, but he was bothered that the city of Berkely had to specifically attack his fellow devil dogs. Although if they were protesting any other branch, it would be the same thing.

If the folks in berkeley do not want Marine recruiters in their city then accomodate them. Also remove other pervayers of violence, State Police, City Police etc. Do not use tax money from outside of the city for any purpose in the city. All the pinkos will soon find out why they are able to enjoy all the rights they have.
I read about this a few days ago on the Navy Times website. I was tempted to blog about it but figured I should wait until I was less angry. I’m still waiting.
I read in another article that the City Council gave Code Pink a parking spot in front of the recruiting station AND a permit to use a loud speaker for their protest. The Mayor, who I believe is retired ARMY, also sent a letter to the recruiters letting them know they are “unwanted and unwelcome”. That kind of thing really upsets me. These are not sexual predators setting up shop next door to an elementary school… these are the men and women who volunteer to protect the men, women and children of our country. I just can not understand why anyone would be protesting them. I am absolutely against the Iraq war but I’m not naive enough to believe that the men and women serving in our military have any say about who we go to war with. If Code Pink is serious, they would be in DC where the decisions are made. I hope Berkeley does lose their funding… and I hope the people of Berkeley get together to protest the idiots serving on their City Council.
[...] when I made that post about the city of berkeley not welcoming the marine recruiters? Well, guess what? They decided to rescind that vote and will not send any more letters saying the [...]
First of all, as a former Marine, this sickens me. For the city of Berkeley to protest the greatest fighting force in the world is asonine. These people should really stop and think about where their priorities lie. They have no problem with holding the transsexual gathering or saving trees, yet they persecute those that fight and stand up for their rights to do so. To oppose the war is one thing, but to oppose the sons, daughters, husbands, and wives of American citizens dying for people they don’t know is another. To leave Iraq now as the democrats plan to do would be terrible. The only way to pull out with any loss of life is to bring EVERYONE home. Tear down the bases is Saudi and other neighboring Islamic countries. Sure, eventually Saud will be taken over by extremists and gas will go up twenty dollars a gallon-but all our troops will be home! So pick your poison.
