Sen. Mike Carrell is sponsoring a bill in Washington that will require DUI violators to put bright yellow license plates on their vehicles for a year after they’ve been given their driving privileges back.
Personally, I’m not sure why this would be a big deal, but I can see some issues with it. Ohio currently does it right now, and there’s really no reason why Washington can’t do it either. Actually many states do it, according to the article, just in different ways.
I can understand the problem of a household with one car though. Should any other person in the household drive the same car, they will gain embarrassment, instead of the intended person. Ok, this could be harsh, but honestly, what can you do about it? Your house mate drove drunk, and while you may not have been able to prevent it, it’s the small price to pay.
Then there’s the problem of what most people will do when they encounter a yellow license plate. What happens? I just hope that people don’t purposely try to hit them just out of malice. This would be extreme however.
I’m rather mixed on this bill, but I’m pulling more towards having them. The message is very very simple: “Just don’t drink and drive.”
What do you think about it?

I’m not sure how I feel about this yet, but my first reaction is that I don’t like the idea. Maybe for repeat offenders, yes, but isn’t paying a fine, getting your license revoked, spending time in jail and taking classes enough? Doesn’t it impinge on our personal freedom? It makes me nervous. Like the rumblings of a V for Vendetta society. I wonder what Senator Carrell’s real reasons are for this.. Just my quick two cents.
