According to NHK in Japan (via Reuters), Toshiba has officially halted the production of HD-DVD equipment. From the article: “Toshiba is expected to suffer losses amounting to tens of billions of yen (hundreds of millions of dollars) to scrap production of HD DVD players and recorders and other steps to exit the business…“.
I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m really reminded of the VHS vs. Betamax race. I thought for sure that Sony would lose out again, but I’m guessing that they learned their lesson once. Now they’re bigger and have more money. They weren’t going to lose this one.
Of course, now that Blu-Ray has the market cornered, does it really matter? seriously now. What amount of difference will it make on my 27″ TV if the movie in Blu-ray or if it’s a normal DVD? I’m thinking no. I was talking with Danalyn earlier and she said, “…HD on an HD-TV that’s smaller than 40″ makes no difference…” and I think she has a really good point. Will it really matter? I mean, I’m pretty picky. It better like jump out at me. I don’t think my 27″ TV is going to do that.
Eventually, I’m sure we’ll get around to buying a Playstation 3, but for right now, there are no games that interest me on it, and I’m certainly not going to buy it to watch movies on Blu-ray. Another observation, from what I’ve seen, Blu-ray Discs are pretty damn costly as well. I’m used to paying $9.99 for a DVD or no more than $19.99. I’m not about to dish out $27.99 for a movie i’ll probably watch a couple times.
So will you be buying a Blu-ray player anytime soon?

Heh. There are no games for the PS3 because Sony is losing the console game war to Microsoft and Nintendo. ;)
Sony took their sweet ass time releasing the PS3 (and pulling their usual we’ll-release-a-few-then-screw-our-preorders bullshit) that 1) consumers got fed up and bought xboxes, and 2) pissed off developers who went on to develop for xbox and said “screw sony”.
The Wii is simply kicking their ass because it’s freaking cheap!
Oh wait…this post was about TVs…not consoles…lol
PS: oh, and I’d rather have the 360 for the Windows Media Extender.
I won’t bother with a Blu-Ray. I have an HD TV right now, but – really – I am not sure it’d make a difference to me. I can’t see paying 30 bucks for a movie. I mean, come on. 30 bucks? I can get an entire season of a TV show for that. Yeesh.
(Oh, the Wii – totally rocks. Everyone should have one. Convert. You know you want a Wii. (; )
I don’t even have an HD TV…my tv is 8 years old, and it still works…I just can’t see myself spending that much money on something that’ll just sit there for background noise while I’m on the computer.
I only ended up with one because mom and dad bought me a new TV for my new house. I probably wouldn’t have bothered.
Though now that my little TV has died, I dunno what to do about that…
Yeah…I’d take one as a gift. lol.
Just have to find someone willing to shell out the dough.
Though, to be honest, I was going to pay for half. Wrote my dad a check. Mom tore it up. O_o
If I did that, my mom would just keep the money. lol.
But then again, she needs the money more than I do.
…not that I have a lot…it’s just that she has less…
My parents actually needed the money – but – I don’t know. She just wouldn’t take it. I tried. I really did. But – oh well. I guess she figures she’s the mom, she ought to pay for my stuff. (;
Yeah, please, anyone feel free to buy me a HD-TV, it doesn’t even have to be bigger than 40″. Consider a housewarming gift.
I have an HD-TV but no HD player. I was going to get the HD DVD player for the XBox 360, but then I saw that Blu-Ray had already won the war and said screw it.
I really hate that Blu-Ray won out. I posted my reasons on my site a couple days ago so I won’t re-type it here.

Oh and Yosh, I’d buy you an HD-TV but… no. I’m far too cheap for that.

I have a PS3 already. We’re saving our money now for a 50″ HD TV. I think it will be while before we actually get one though.

i think we still have plenty of time..
Not going hi-res until the price on blu-ray dvds and players drop a lot more. Right now, I wait until movies are in the $5-$10 range before I buy them, which means I have to wait about about a year.
