On to my citizenship

So, yesterday, I received my notification from the USCIS that I am now scheduled to go to an Oath Ceremony on 4/30/08 at 2pm. That’s right people, finally I will become naturalized and become a US citizen. About time, right? You’d think that serving in the US Military would automatically make me a citizen, but nope, it just isn’t true. They certainly make it easier to become a citizen now if you are active duty, but it’s not instant. That’s probably a good thing too.

You might recall my past posts about taking the citizenship test and how “hard” it is. Well, the studying paid off, because now it’s going to be official. Of course, the test wasn’t really all that hard. It will be changing in October of this year, so right now is the time to get citizenship while it’s easy (and cheap!).

The first thing I’m going to do with my citizenship is to register to vote and get a new passport. My old Japanese passport will be no good anymore, but I think I’ll keep it as a souvenir. Gotta have some history with the homeland, right? Kinda funny because, I still pay taxes and do everything a citizen does, I just can’t vote and get a federal job. Go figure. I will be able to soon though! Kick ass!

That is awesome!

I have a friend who moved here from Canada when he was 10. He just turned 39 and I challenged him on his birthday to become a US citizen before he turns 40.

Congratulations!!! You probably are more familiar with US history than I am, since my last history class was in ‘90 …

LaDonna Says:

Congratulations! I was just wondering the other day how citizenship quest was going when someone mentioned to me at work that they didn’t know my boyfriend was a naturalized citizen.

Hey, what Plugin allows readers to edit his/her comments? This is kind of cool!

Melanie Says:

That is so cool, Congratulations! I want to come and see you take your oath. Then we can go out to a strip club and drink Budweiser like real Americans!

Poppy Says:

Woohoo! Congrats!

Colin Brooks Says:

Yoshi Says:

@lucy lol that’s funny since I’ll be getting my citizenship before 40 now. LOL and I’ve been in the US since age 4. :P

@monique LOL the last history lesson I had was in 86. :D Studying for the civics test was like 50 or so questions. and not all were history. hehe. Your American History is probably just as good as mine.

@LaDonna Yeah, I was wondering what was going on too until I got the email. The plugin is WP-AJAX-comments. It’s a pretty popular one.

@Melanie OMG you should! I don’t know how many people can hang out, but I’m sure you can! :D LOL I don’t know any strip clubs in the area though LOL!

@Poppy Thank you! It’s been a long time coming. LOL

@colin I’m happy too! weeeeee! :P

@ocb Thanks!

awesome! congrats :-)

Well done Yoshi! I know some of what that whole journey is like. My Wife is American and is going for Canadian Citizenship as soon as she is eligible for it so we’ve been filling and filing paperwork with the Gov for a while now.

It’s the same here, right now she has Permanent Resident status so the only things she can’t do is enter into Politics/Government and Vote.

Phooey on the Natural thing though, who wants to be natural? You should ask to be an Abnormal Citizen!

Oh and the Passport thing..when my Wife got her Canuckian Passport they actually took her American one and destroyed it. So make sure you mention your desire to have it, not sure if that makes any difference or not.

Jen Says:

That is definitely something to be proud of. I think that people that have to go through that process to get citizenship appreciate it a lot more than the average American. So many Americans take for granted the rights they enjoy as citizens.

Congrats!

Meesh Says:

I’m so excited and proud of ya baby! I can’t wait…

*smoochies*

Daddy Forever Says:

Glad you’re not going to get deported!

Kentucky Girl Says:

How totally awesome and cool! If it weren’t so damn far away, I’d come up for it. I’ve never been to one. :D Of course, I’ve not been to a Briss either…so yeah. I’m thinking the Oath ceremony is probably more entertaining, no?
