Second Life

Ok, can someone shed some light on this for me? Yes, I understand the concept of Second Life. It’s like an interactive world where you can chat and hang out with your friends inside a 3D world. Yeah, it looks cool. But what I’m really not understanding is pretty simple. What’s the goal of this? I don’t know why, but I just have this overwhelming urge to understand Second Life.

Now, honestly, I understand that you can set up shop, you can actually make real money from the game by selling goods, such as clothes (for within the game) and I guess there are other ways to make money, but I’m just not talented enough for that. I’ve explored a small part of the world, and I’ve even tried to participate with the whole CSI:NY mystery. Which was really cool btw. Although I didn’t get very far.

I guess because I don’t know anyone inside Second Life, so it’s a bit tougher. I don’t make friends in those things too easy, only because there are so many jokers and losers out there who try to ruin the game for you. (ala World of Warcraft) But I digress.

There is also some humour out there too: Get a First Life. Now that is just hilarious. Go ahead, the link is real. It’s only one page.

So can someone help me out with Second Life? Should I just stick with my First Life?

I had the same issue when I tried out Second Life. It is a bit like the Sims but it’s taken too seriously and that sucks the fun out of it. When reality gets involved in games they stop being games. Using real money or making real money through it creeps me out a lot.

Yoshi, SL is NOT NOT a game, any more than RL is a game. You do not “score points” or “shoot space aliens.” There are no winners or losers, start or end. It is a simulation of RL in many ways, but it’s on steroids & then some. :) The biggest difference is that it is a 3D virtual reality and sits on your desk top. You can be anyone or even “anything” you want. visit me, huh?

Katie Says:

I don’t get it either. My mom is really into it for some reason. *shrug*

Yoshi Says:

@colin well, some people are making a living with second life. It’s just how it is I guess. I can’t say that that’s a bad thing though.

@linda Yeah I know it’s not a game per se, but still I just don’t really understand it. I guess I need to get a first life. LOL

@katie Oh yeah? I need to get together with people in there. LOL

I played Second Life for like a week. Most of the time I just played slingo and talked to my friend that had me sign up lol. I understand how easy it would be to get involved with designing etc for it seeing as how it is real money, but beyond that I found it underwhelming. I need goals..challenges. Even if it is just gaining skill points like in the sims lol

Abraxus Says:

The “Goal” of Second Life, if you can call it one…is much the same as it was for anyone playing MUDs back in the day. It’s a chance to actually influence how a Virtual World looks and feels for yourself and others.

Myself I could not get over the horrendous lag and cheap graphics but that being said I have helped my friends with Character Profiles and Descriptions for things within the world itself.

My only real problem with the game itself was the Sex, which is odd since I am a BIG fan of sex in general. You can get Anatomically correct bodies, Furniture that allows you to simulate various sexual positions, attire that does the same etc etc.

And much of it is…not good, as in poorly designed, poorly drawn, programmed or what have you.

I played in LOTS of MUDs when I was younger and it is true, some things are simply better left to the imagination.

Effigy Says:

I originally joined Second Life in early 2004. It was really exciting at first. And being into graphics, 3d, and scripting, I had a lot of fun making stuff in there.

Even pulled out several hundred dollars US from selling scripted weapons at one point in those early days.

As the years progressed, while new features were added to SL, it became more and more unstable at times which became annoying and sometimes just plain impossible to even use.

When I got tired of the building/selling aspect in there, I pretty much left. Since, perhaps like you, I don’t get into the social thing as easily as others might.

And if you’re not a content creator, land seller, or developer of some kind, the only other real options are usually social ones which kind of left me standing around not doing anything. Hehe.

Anyway, I popped in from Entrecard to drop on you, and saw this and had to read it as SL = nostalgia for me. :D

Yoshi Says:

@ocb I know right? But yeah, I can see the appeal though seriously. But yeah, I need goals too. I have to be the best at something!

@abraxus LOL I don’t think I even got so far as the sex in the game. I think I just had an issue with dressing myself. LOL

@effigy I bet it was pretty fun then. It’s kinda fun to do things when you’re one of the first to do it or it’s fresh and new. That would appeal to me then. But now, everyone’s doing it and it’s not quite the same appeal. Kinda like blogging. :P And thanks for stopping by and commenting! :D

Neptunebaby Says:

I wanted to play Second Life because I enjoy the Sims and thought it would be something I would like, but I never actually set it up. I guess I just got lazy and then forgot about it. So, in short.. I have no answer.
