I know a majority of my readers are probably not familiar with Kim Harrison, who I met when I went down to Portland. In her novels, she tells the story of the “Turn” which was when the supernatural creatures came “out of the closet” (so to speak) and announced that they were not in fact myth, but rather real. The cause of the Turn were some genetically enhanced tomatoes that became poisonous to humans, but not to witches and other supernatural creatures. Hence the “coming out of the closet”.
With all the hoopla with tomatoes in the news today, it Really makes me wonder if Kim knew that eventually this day would come. Now everyone is holding the tomatoes and making sure everything is safe before serving them. How crazy is this?

Possibly. I had some tomatoes just the other day and I didn't die. *raises eyebrow*
I just picked up her second book today :)
I've been eating lots of tomatoes and haven't died yet… *knock on wood*
i'd be ok with most parts of "the turn," just so long as we don't start killing off the geneticists and i don't have to start buying ketchup at a specialty store…
So… her books have to do with poisonous tomatoes causing the supernatural to come out of hiding? As someone who has not read any of the books yet, that is the most ridiculous sounding premise I have ever heard.
Woohoo! I think that sounds like great fun (not the poison tomatoes part, but mythological characters being real). Come on out, witches and wolfmen, lets have a look-see atcha!
Seriously though, the premise doesn't sound too absurd given the breadth of the scifi/fantasy genre. I had not heard of the author previously, but I'm going to give her a try.
did you see what kim harrison posted on her site? "If you see a sign about the tomato ban, take a picture making sure it includes enough to know where it is, and send it to me!…And I'll post it."
@ocb that's good that you didn't die. i would be sad if that happened. But no one's died from the tomatoes, right? just sick… it's still crazy though.
@katie omg you're only on the second book, you must catch up!
@the other yoshi LOL yeah, no doubt. But how would you react knowing that vampires and witches were real? I mean seriously!
@cybrpunk lol no, it's about a witch, a vampire and a pixie who walk into a bar… the turn was a back story for the books.
@jennifer yeah, it just sounds like it could be true, and it could happen. I think it's a great story!
@the other yoshi yeah, i saw that! I've been seeing the signs everywhere! now they're saying "we're only serving FDA approved tomatoes" as if the FDA know what's going on lol
