Ok, when we saw this new show, The Food Detectives on Food Network, I thought it could be pretty cool. A show that tries to bust the myths of food, such as getting drowsy because of turkey, and whether the “5-second rule” truly applies, is definitely up my alley.
But I didn’t believe the myth about not being able to eat 6 saltine crackers in less than a minute. That episode was enlightening, but I still didn’t believe it. I realize the tests and trials were pretty conclusive, but I had to test this one out myself.
So I sat down with 6 saltine crackers and started the clock. Amazingly enough, when you’re eating them as fast as you can, it’s tough to eat saltines! I was able to get 6 crackers into my mouth, and I actually did eat 3 of them before 1 minute was up, but I was unable to swallow all the crackers in 1 minute. I think personally that the dryness of the crackers has everything to do with it.
I’m convinced, however, that it could still be possible with practice. It can be done.

Oh god, just he thought of even TRYING that makes me want to down a glass of water as quick as humanly possible!
I don’t think it’s possible. I don’t think we can produce saliva quickly enough to compensate.
Don’t forget to chase them with a gallon of milk. ;)
can you swallow them like a pill? chew drink, chew drink?? hmmmm?
Wow, I remember that myth. Didn’t I try to do that once? I can’t remember. I still don’t believe it. I can do it.
