I remember many years ago, I started reading this book, called Wizard’s First Rule. I instantly fell in love with it. I loved the story, I was Totally immersed. I instantly fell in love with the characters, and the storyline. I loved almost everything about it. It was sad, it was happy, it was just exciting. So I picked up the next book, and so on and so on. Terry Goodkind, the author of the Sword of Truth series (starting with WFR), finally ended the series this year. The last few books were not quite as gripping or sensational, and frankly, I felt that they ended too soon. Almost as if Mr. Goodkind wanted to just end it already and probably pursue other things.
So when I heard they doing a tv show about the books, I was ecstatic. I enjoyed the speculation of who was going to be what role, and so on and so on. And thusly, Legend of the Seeker was born.
Now, after the bump, there are spoilers. There are spoilers for both the TV show and the books. So if you don’t want to be spoiled, don’t follow. If you don’t Really care, then proceed.
First of all, when I heard that Sam Raimi was going to produce the show, I loved the idea. I loved Xena, and Hercules, and most of all, I loved his movies. I mean Spiderman? Great movie. Seriously. But I didn’t think the show would look or feel like Xena/Hercules. I mean it’s not quite the same, granted, but OMFG, please stop with the slow motion. Matrix was yesterday people. And the storyline? They’ve changed it!
Case in point: Confessors. Ok, the Confessors in the book are the “judges” and “arbiters” of the land. They are feared throughout the Midlands, and they should be. They’re powers are simple. They touch someone and said person instantly feels the compulsion to make the confessor happy. They are no longer themselves. Instead, they are slaves to the confessor. They have no desires, but to make the confessor happy. Now, I understand that this would be visually difficult albeit impossible to show.
However.
The show takes the confessor and makes her into a literal “judge” who actually presides over conflicts. Someone who is high in stature only in name, as if anyone could do her job. Honestly, it’s not the same thing. In the books, she would make someone “confess” by touching them with her power. She would only be used in serious dire circumstances when someone actually requests to be confessed, knowing they would lose everything that they were and become slaves to the confessor. Confessing is a last case scenario. It should not be used in the case of paternity like this last episode.
Unfortunately, I understand that not everything can be shown visually, and you cannot show things like the power of the confessor. However, I have to admit that they have Really changed everything about the story IMHO. They should have just had the story take place in the world of the Sword of Truth, and changed all the characters. Then I think the show would be much better in my eyes. Don’t change everything about the story.
I could go on and on, but I will leave it at that. Possibly because I’m tired of writing this already.

I too was a fan of Goodkind, still am I guess. But I knew going in from the Trailers that this series would be a horrible mangling of an otherwise spectacular series. Hercules and Xena did well because they were serious with a huge does of tongue in cheek. This SoT Series just does not work like that, they tried to stuff a round hole in a square peg…yeah I said it that way on purpose :P
I'll have to add it to my reading list. I loved the Rachel Morgan books you recommended. Can't wait for the next one.
