Ok so the other day, we were driving down the road and these group of bicyclists were riding their bikes in the road. They were riding double wide and well to be honest, while they were in their “bike lane” in the road, they were still causing the traffic to be slow because many people had to go around them. This annoyed me. This prompted me to come up with a poll. Are bicycles allowed to be in the road in your area? Here in Washington where we live, bikes are essentially treated like cars, but they are also pedestrians. It all depends on the situation. Is this fair? What do you think? What are the laws like where you live?
Personally, I think bicyclists shouldn’t be in traffic at all. They can’t possibly go as fast as a car or a motorcycle, and well, it just seems to me that a pedestrian should not be in the middle of the road. I like the bike lanes, but honestly, I think they are a bit too close to the “normal” lanes. There should be a “buffer” zone, and while I know this is not practical, I cannot help but think it should be this way. Finally, riding “double wide” should be forbidden in the bike lane. There’s just no room!

I feel the same way you do. Which will piss off the bicyclists but really the two don't mix well. There needs to be another way.
They scare me, because there are so many idiots on the road these days. I never feel comfortable staying in my lane even though they may be in the bike lane – I ALWAYS slow down &/or go around.
Maybe I'm the idiot? ;-) I'm just not comfy in my car & them with really no protection – what if I blew a tire, or they swerved to miss something?
I don't think they belong in the flow of regular (especially if it's heavy) traffic.
I really hate the ones that ride in the normal traffic lanes when THERE A FUCKING BIKE LANE RIGHT THERE. Although, there aren't many bike lanes here…only in the yuppie areas…which I usually avoid, anyway.
But…what I REALLY hate (oh yes, there's more) are the bicyclists who want to be treated like a car when they're hogging up the road, BUT have the fucking nerve to break the traffic laws and run stop signs and don't yield and other stuff cars have to do…THEN they get pissed off at you when you don't stop when you have the right of way! That fucking pisses me off to no end!
Preach on girl!!
@daisy – Yes, there is a solution, and it's simple, just get the damn bikes off the road! they should ride on the sidewalk, and if there's no sidewalk, just ride as close to the side of the road as possible. That's what I think.
@tug – OMG you're so not the idiot. It's those bicyclists who think because they're on bikes you have to be cautious around them. They're taking advantage of us car drivers! The fact we have to slow down around them because we are caring drivers just upsets me. ugh!
@danalyn – LOL! I know! I'm totally pissed off at them.
@meesh – lol /agree!
Contrsry to the popular myth that hsa been propagated by the motoring public, those "bike lanes" and the so-called "bike paths", are extremely dangerous for cyclists and drivers both. Being a cyclist myself, I know this from personal experience.
I know that people think that cyclists who use the bike paths do not have to deal with car traffic. And they would be totally WRONG! I don't know about the rest you here, but the bike paths where I live cross numerous driveways and traffic intersections where quite a few drivers are too busy yakking on their cell phones to be bothered to pay attention to where they are going. Has anybody ever tried using the voice mail that is included in their plans?
Some of the people here have shown that they care more about complaining what is in effect a very minor inconvenience than they do about real safety.
About the safety bit, Google it and you will find quite a few studies that back up my claim.
Yes, it is always your fault when you rear-ned anybody, whether they are on a bicycle or in a car. So you don't think that is fair? I only have two words for you. TOUGH LUCK! That is just part of the responsibility of being a driver. And if someone calls you on your cell phone? I believe the answer to that problem would be to use the above mentioned VOICE MAIL!
Personally, I care more about my car, and don't want some bicyclist's ass denting the shit out of my hood.
Personally, no matter who argues what, I think bicyclists should be banned from the normal flow of traffic.
Personally, your argument isn't going to change my mind because I've seen too many idiot bicyclists ignore the traffic laws (that they are obligated to obey just like cars), just because they have better mobility than cars.
Personally, I think everyone should spell check before posting comments.
"Personally" doesn't mean shit in the grand scheme of things, but they're still my personal opinion and they will always be spoken regardless of what anyone else thinks.
Yes, I have seen many who disobey the traffic laws and am glad to say that I am not one of those riders. I do my best to obey the traffic laws. Yet, many others do not know them or just plain old don't care. They will some day meet their early demise
