For the past three days, I’ve been getting IV antibiotics, because my tube has been infected. They were doing IV because it needs to be pretty aggressive. During this time, I got to spend quite a bit of time in Urgent Care. (our healthcare provider’s equivalent to the Emergency Room) I noticed a lot of things.
You are able to tell right off, who are the nurses that care and who are the nurses that don’t. This is a Really sad thing to me. I used to be in healthcare, and I know how the job can get crazy and frustrating and tiresome. But honestly, you should never take it out on a patient. This is not a business where caring about your “customers” is not necessary. But on some level, there are nurses who act that way and act as if they are doing you a favor by helping you. First off, those nurses should just be fired. Nurses who don’t care or have stopped caring are a danger. It just upsets me.
I remember a quote from the show, ER, where Noah Wiley’s character was talking to a resident doing their rounds in the ER after a patient dies. He said (something to this effect) “do you want the good news or the bad news first?” and the resident replied, “the bad news”. Noah Wiley’s character says, “the bad news is: you never get used to it. The good news is: you never get used to it.”
I am Totally digging that. Because it’s true. You should never get used to that. It’s a job where you care about the people. If you treat the job like a job, I’m afraid you need to quit. At least do something different. I’ll get off my soapbox now.
Hopefully your times in the ER were not crazy like mine.
Oh, by the way, thanks to Danalyn, I now have nested comments! Yay!

I agree with you, I understand that anyone can have an off day but when your job entails the sometimes life-saving care of others I think it's fair to say that if you can't set it aside and do your job properly you need to either find another line of work or see about calling in and getting your shit together at home before your issues actually endanger someone else.
Exactly, now that's what I'm talking about! sweet these nested replies are so much better. I <3 wp 2.7!
I am sorry you have been having a tough few days. I hope things get better fast.
I agree too that some nurses should not be in the field they are. I have had a few bad ones and it made a huge difference in how I recovered. I have also had a few angels who still loved me even when I would throw a tissy fit now and then. Those are the ones that are good at their job and matter the most.
Yay for nested comments!!
Yeah I'm getting better. I hope Meesh doesn't kill me though! LOL (testing this reply from the CP)
She wouldn't do that. Sickness and Health, remember?
yeah she's so awesome i love her!
I couldn't agree more! I noticed even as a volunteer – you can tell who cares, and who is collecting a paycheck…sad.
Heal, take care of you!
Yeah it's really really sad!
You know, I remember I went to an urgent care clinic in OKC…actually, I went there twice. The first time, it wasn't a problem at all, I just needed prescriptions. The second time, I was having an asthma attack…I couldn't freaking breathe. And the chick at the counter just didn't want to be there and it showed by me having to wait in the waiting room for an hour without air. That sucked.
Luckily, once they took me behind, the nurses back there were all, like, "oh shit, we need to get you on some albuterol and steriods" and they fixed me up. But yeah, I was half expecting to pass out. And I really don't know where this comment was going. lol.
that just reminds me that if you're in serious distress it's better just to call 911. honestly. if you go to the ER, you know they are going to make you wait at least 30 minutes (which is bs i think) but honestly if it's really that bad, then 911 ambulance is the only way. My dad totally yelled at me because of that. of course when i had my stroke, i didn't know it was a stroke! i know now!
Yeah, but my copay for ER visits was $100, my copay for urgent care was $25. lol.
Haha yeah there is that point… :p
Testes…
When I was in the ER this summer, one of the nurses was pissy with me because she couldn't get the IV in. Umm yeah, so sorry I was dehydrated because I couldn't stop vomiting from the medicine her hospital gave me that morning. But the nurse I had that night was an angel — kept me doped up all night. It was fantastic. :-p
see, this is exactly how it is. It's crazy. people should step back and relax a bit.
It is so frustrating to come in contact with people in some type of public position; especially when they act like they have something better to do then to help you — which is actually their job. I feel that lately I've just run into way too many of those people.
On that note, I'd like to think that I'm not a violent person; however, lately I feel like I am just ready to throttle a whole buncha people. So, our dialysis people and the not so friendly urgent care guy (who's lucky I wasn't with you at the time)…well, they better start watching themselves! Heh, be warned peeps, you mess with my baby you're gonna be messing with Meesh!
Love you baby! I got your back…
Didn't I tell ya she was awesome, Yoshi?
I already she was awesome. :P but yeah, i'm so lucky! don't mess with the meesh!
