So anyone who watched last night’s 2 hour season finale of Supernatural must have been surprised. Or maybe not so surprised. I certainly was. This post will contain quite a bit of spoilers, but rest assured, I will warn you before I go into spoilers.
For those who don’t know what Supernatural is, it’s a show about two brothers who have lost their parents in an ongoing battle against demons. They call themselves hunters, but they don’t hunt animals. They hunt monsters. They know about the things that go bump in the night, and they’re afraid of the dark because they Really know what’s out there.
Sam and Dean Winchester are the last line of defense against everything that’s evil. These guys are Really monster and ghost hunters.
This is where I will leave off and let you know anything after this will have spoilers for the season finale. If you have not watched the show or this episode and don’t want to be spoiled, then you should stop reading this post now. This will be like a mini-recap of the show(s), so if you’re just looking also to learn what happened and don’t care about spoilers, then feel free to read on.
Fair Warning: this is a pretty long post, since it covers 2 episodes. You’ve been warned!
SPOILERS ARE AHEAD, DON’T READ ON IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW! Again, sorry about the caps.
The 2 hour finale of Supernatural was actually 2 episodes. The first episode, “Let it bleed”, is basically about Dean and Bobby’s search for the door to Purgatory. The second episode, “The man who knew too much”, is about Sam and Castiel’s search for the door to Purgatory.
In “Let it bleed”, we find out that Crowley, in his attempt to be unhindered by the Winchesters, kidnaps Lisa and Ben. Dean is now even more determined to stop Crowley and Castiel and vows to save the hostages. Meanwhile, Castiel is still battling with his decision to find the door to Purgatory. He continuously searches for approval by Dean, as it seems that Dean is the only true family he seems to genuinely care for anymore. But Dean wants nothing to do with Castiel, accusing him of not trusting Dean to help him with the ongoing battle against Raphael. Castiel can only bow his head and continue to watch over them. Albeit invisibly.
Sam and Dean, meanwhile, look for aid to Balthazar. They explain to Balthazar that Castiel is not acting like himself and his plans to open the door to Purgatory. We find out that Castiel has not revealed these plans to Balthazar and he begins to have doubts. Regardless, they ask Balthazar not for help with dealing with Castiel but to find Lisa and Ben and rescue them from Crowley. Balthazar says he could help them, but instead disappears.
Bobby, however, has been researching the door to Purgatory. He finds out that H.P. Lovecraft had actually managed to open the door to Purgatory, and while trying to find out how this was completed, realizes the door to Purgatory was indeed opened before by Lovecraft. He also finds out that an invisible monster did indeed pass through the doorway, and it turns out the mother of one the children at the ritual was present. The mother of this child was Eleanor, who turns out to be an old flame of Bobby’s. He warns her that Castiel is searching for her and that it was only a matter of time before he caught up to her. Bobby offers his protection, but she refuses.
Meanwhile, Balthazar comes to Sam and Dean who are torturing demons to get the location of Lisa and Ben. He explains that he had a change of heart and decides to help them. He told them he would be the double agent and gives them the location of Lisa and Ben. He can’t help them however, since the location is angel-proofed. He teleports them there and bids them good riddance.
They eventually get to rescue Lisa and Ben, however, Sam is knocked unconscious and locked in a room. While untying Lisa and Ben from their location, Dean is surprised by a demon who know possesses Lisa. He is now torn in a circumstance of how to manage the situation. He attempts to exorcise the demon, and in retaliation, the demon stabs Lisa in the stomach, hoping to kill her. Dean continues the exorcism and manages to help Lisa in time to get out of the building. He saves everyone, including Sam, and they go to a hospital.
While at the hospital, Lisa is on a ventilator and is in critical condition. Ben obviously blames Dean for the situation he is in and walks out of the room, passing Castiel as he storms out. Castiel explains that he did not intend for any harm to come to them. He heals Lisa and Dean admits he wishes that it was enough to mend the relationship between them. Castiel knows he can never gain back the trust from Dean. But this was the least he could do. Before leaving, Dean asks him for one more favor. Of course, at this point, there is a commercial.
When we come back, Lisa wakes up in the hospital room and Ben explains to her that there was a car accident and that she was OK now. They laugh together, and look blissful. They don’t seem to remember anything that happened. Dean watches from the doorway and finally reveals himself. Lisa looks at him and asks him who he is. She not only doesn’t remember the capture, she doesn’t remember Dean. We can only assume that this was the final favor Dean asked of Castiel. For Lisa and Ben to forget him and that they ever met. Dean confesses to them that he was the driver that hit them and he was very sorry for everything. Lisa says it’s OK since everyone is fine. So Dean walks out of their lives just like that.
Before the show ends, Eleanor is walking to her car to leave her safe house and finds she can’t get into her car. In the reflection of the window we see Castiel, and they both disappear. End of episode.
In “The man who knew too much”, we start with Sam running from the cops. He keeps running until he manages to escape into a now closed bar with only the bartender cleaning up. Robin (played by none other than Erica Cerra, who plays Jo from Eureka) explains the bar is closed, but Sam is insistent that he just catch his breath for a minute. She asks him his name, but he can’t remember. Come to find out he can’t remember anything at all about himself.
He starts to get flashbacks in the bar and he remembers that he was with 2 men (Bobby and Dean) and they were meeting someone, a woman, in some alley. He then remembers where he was staying and looks it up on the internet. The hotel exists and Robin and Sam go there to find out what is going on. They find his room and it has tons of research of finding how to open the door to Purgatory. He now finds out that his name is Sam when he remembers finding Eleanor in a street alley, wounded from torture by Crowley and Castiel. She admits she gave them the ritual to opening the door to Purgatory. Eleanor dies before she could tell them where they were.
Sam and Robin then decide they must go to Sioux Falls, SD, as that’s where Bobby would be and would have answers. We now find out that what’s happening is Sam is trapped in his own mind. Castiel confronted the three in the alley after Eleanor dies and tries again to explain his actions. He tears down the wall that Death had set up in Sam’s mind from his experience in Hell. This in turn puts Sam into a coma, as he dreams of his journey with Robin to South Dakota.
In Sam’s mind, he is now confronting his soulless self as he drives to Bobby’s. While in a forest, he finally confronts him and finds out he is dreaming. His soulless self wants to kill Sam to take over his body. Instead, Sam manages to kill his soulless self and all the memories are absorbed into himself. He now remembers everything that happened during his lost year, including who Robin was. Robin was a bartender who just happened to be in the way of a demon Sam was hunting. Sam shot her who was being held as a hostage by the demon. Then he shot the demon.
In the real world, Dean and Bobby are visited by Balthazar, who reveals to them the location where the door to Purgatory will be opened. He explains that he cannot possibly bring them there and zaps out. Dean and Bobby prepare for the trip and give Sam the note with the address and hope that he wakes up in time to help them.
In Sam’s mind, he now confronts the memory of his stay in Hell. When he finds himself at Bobby’s house, the memory of Hell simply says that Sam does not want to do this and instead, to stay in his mind. Go back to the bartender and just live out his life in this world. There would be no need to absorb the memories of Hell and go back into the real world. The memories are incredibly painful and he knows Sam could never take it. But instead Sam does end up killing the memory of Hell too and absorbs him.
Castiel decides to renegotiate the terms of the contract with Crowley. Instead, he decides that Crowley will get nothing and tells Crowley to either “leave, or die.” At this point, Castiel summons Balthazar and reveals to him that Dean is on his way to his location. Balthazar feigns surprise and listens to Castiel as he say there’s a Judas in his midst. Castiel asks Balthazar to find this Judas. Balthazar promises to do so, but Castiel already knows who has betrayed him. Castiel instead appears behind Balthazar and kills him.
Meanwhile, Bobby and Dean drive up to the building and do some surveying. Come to find out there are angels protecting the location. While they ponder how they are going to invade the building, Bobby hears something in the distance. The sky is overcome with the darkness of demons and sweeps up the Impala and manage to flip the car with Bobby and Dean inside of it.
Crowley is back and tells Castiel not to underestimate the King of Hell. Castiel tries to kill him, but Crowley says it’s not quite possible to do because of his new ally. Raphael shows up behind Crowley and now, it’s Crowley’s turn to tell Castiel, “leave, or die.”
Bobby and Dean, meanwhile have managed to get out of the Impala and make their way into the compound. They get to Raphael and Crowley in the middle of the ritual but are tossed around silly by the angel and demon. They can only watch as they complete the ritual. However, nothing happens. While they are confused on what’s going on, Castiel shows up and reveals that he switched the bottle of blood. Crowley, however, in his attention to detail, says the bottle Castiel is holding is empty. He must have already completed the ritual.
Lo behold, Castiel holds the souls of all those in Purgatory. Crowley disappears, as he knows when he is beaten, leaving only Raphael to receive the wrath of Castiel. He destroys Raphael, and explain to Bobby and Dean how it feels to hold the souls of millions. Dean pleads with Castiel to release them and let them go back to Purgatory before Castiel blows himself up and everyone with him. Castiel only seems to ignore him when Sam stabs him in the back with the angel weapon. But nothing happens.
Castiel explains that now he is no longer an angel, so the weapon will not affect him. Instead, he is now the new god. He commands them to bow down and pray to their new god when the credits roll.
How about that? I had only hoped that there would be some sort of connection with the Lovecraft stories and they would invade this world. I’m just kinda bummed that it wasn’t Really the case. It could however be a basis for Season 7. My prediction in that respect would be that Castiel is unable to contain all those souls and they are just unleashed on the earth. This could be a disastrous situation. I’m not sure how I would write that.
Then there’s the issue of Castiel. He obviously believes that he is the new god. I simply can’t believe that. We all (well most of us) know that God is omnipotent, omniscient, etc, etc. We cannot possibly perceive on any scale how powerful he is. Therefore, unless he was just Totally ignoring this world, there would never ever be a situation where Castiel could be called god. In my mind, that makes him just like Lucifer, where he proclaims dominion over everyone. It just doesn’t quite jive with me. Therefore, there is some fault with Castiel. He’s being overtaken by his own pride in thinking that he could possibly take on the role of God.
Sam. Wow. What happens now that the wall Death put up is gone? We know that his experience in Hell is exponentially worse than Dean’s tour of Hell. However, he was able to function enough to get to their location and stab Castiel in the back. Does that mean he will be better eventually like Dean is now? Dean doesn’t seem to have too many repercussions from his stay in Hell. I think this will be a pretty decent Season 7. Not for Sam, but entertaining at least.
So what now? I think that it’s tough to top a lot of this. I sometimes wish Sam and Dean could just go back to hunting supernatural monsters. I thought that the increase of monsters was a side effect of averting the apocalypse. I think that would have been a great story IMHO. No more angels or demons, just monsters.
I mean Really. What could Sam or Dean possibly do to benefit the war in Heaven? I think they should have just let the angels battle it out on their own, then Castiel could come down and say, “hey, we won, be happy with me.” But I guess it wouldn’t have been interesting then.
I mean, sure we could have the occasional demon possession. Monsters is where it’s at though. I can see why Eric Kripke had it in mind to end it at Season 5. I mean the apocalypse? Yeah, tough to avert that and top that one. Hopefully Season 7 will be good. Either that, or they’ll just jump the shark and have to cancel the show.

I'm SO over the religious aspects of this show. I agree, I wish they could just go back to hunting monsters so we could enjoy all their adventures. They are getting too complicated and I hate what they've done to Castiel. I read that he's not getting a regular role in the next season, so I think he may have run his course.
I totally hate what they've done with Castiel. They almost make it seem like he will take the place of Lucifer. Nevermind that he's still trapped in the prison, with Michael. I seriously hope they don't revive that at all.
They really need to come up with some good stuff. When they killed Eve, I was really bummed. I mean seriously. I understand it wasn't entirely easy to do, but it just seemed like she didn't really have a big role.
Honestly, I'd love to see minions of Yog Sothoth everywhere, with Sam and Dean hunting them down and killing them. Maybe the Elder gods will show up from Cthulhu mythos. Now THAT would be awesome.
Relax guys, its just a tv show. man in my opinion any material that these actors get to work with,no matter how complicated it gets. jensen, and jarad can act the hell out of it. the more weird, the better. i do like the monster hunting, but the angel, demon story is interesting to because it deals with mortality, and kind of religion. They seem to be tackling hidden messages within the bible
Well, of course the angels and demons have something to do with religion. And Cas being the new god? come on, if that doesn't have something to do with religion, I have no idea what does.
I'm sure since Misha is supposed to have a smaller role in the next season, they'll finally get over the angel/demon thing which has IMHO been overdone in this series. Although I have to admit that since day one that's what this has been leading up to.
That's most likely why Eric Kripke had only seen this series go to 5 seasons. Because really, how do you top armageddon right?
