How do you eat ramen?

Perhaps you remember the video where I show people how to eat ramen? I thought I’d revive it again, and plus take a poll on how you eat ramen or somen (cold soba noodles). I just wonder how many of you slurp when you eat your ramen. While so many people might consider this rude, because of cultural differences, it’s not entirely so rude in Japan. I do want to point out that you probably don’t need to be obnoxiously loud, or purposely loud when slurping. There’s a difference in eating the ramen and just plain being rude (i.e. mocking). We don’t need that! Of course, in your own home, you can do anything you want. I just want to point out this is in public. Here’s the video:

Finally, here’s a poll you can vote on whether or not you slurp when eating your ramen.

Do you slurp when you eat ramen or somen?

How to quit smoking

Recently the Washington State Department of Health started running these commercials about real people who are writing letters to themselves, starting with “Dear Me…” and stating what’s going on in their lives and why smoking is slowing them down. The whole concept is as simple as this:

No one can make me quit but me.

This is so true. I’m one of the lucky ones. As an ex smoker of about 20+ years, at the height of my smoking, I was smoking about 2 packs a day. I quit because I got the flu and every time I tried to smoke a cigarette, I couldn’t stop coughing. So eventually after a week of being sick, I just didn’t smoke anymore. But honestly, I know how hard it is to quit because I tried. I’ve tried so many times I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve tried. I’m so glad I did.

My dad has emphysema and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). So just watching my dad carry around an oxygen tank everywhere he goes is reminder enough to why it’s bad to smoke. Smoking is bad. But you know, no one can make you quit but you. Maybe you should write a letter to yourself and be objective about it and say what you’ve been wanting to say all this time. Maybe you’ll realize how much you should be quitting.

If you want to see one of the commercials, the video is after the bump. I think this one Really hit close to home.

If I had a soundtrack, it'd go something like this: Pretty Woman

I remember way back when, living in Japan, we’d heard of this thing called MTV. We were astonished they finally made a channel dedicated just to music videos. So we had some friends send a VHS tape of some of the music videos to us in Japan. It was awesome.

The first video I saw, was Pretty Woman by Van Halen. I thought the video was incredibly hilarious and was just awesome. I loved it. I thought this was a wonderful thing that MTV did, and playing music videos all day and night with the occasional music news was great.

Of course, as we all know now, they don’t Really play any videos anymore and instead have all those reality shows which just embarrasses a lot of people. But I digress.

I distinctly remember standing in my friend’s living room watching this video with a few friends. I think all of us were pretty impressed. My friend who had the video had just moved to Japan, so he got to see music videos and the real MTV already so he wasn’t too impressed.

Here is the original video, hopefully you enjoy it! Remember, this video was banned at one point in time!

[edit] The youtube video was made so embedding was disabled so you’ll have to watch it directly on youtube.
